It can be grueling, especially the last dive of the day. But it’s extremely important for ADF&G to collect accurate information, and use that information to make good management decisions.

As project leader for the Southeast Alaska region—essentially the entire state—Jan Rumble spends half the year 50 ft. underwater, diving up from five to ten times a day, one week on, one week off, observing the ocean floor. Rumble’s team conducts stock assessments for all three commercial dive fish species in Southeast Alaska: red sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and geoduck.
