(Alaska’s) a place, a job, where… you are judged only by how well you work, your character and respect for others.

How long have you been fishing in Alaska?

27 years. My sister had worked in Alaska before me. I started as a processor in 1993 – with the plan to fish for two years – and worked my way up on deck and into the wheelhouse. I am currently the Mate on the F/T Araho.

What makes fishing in Alaska special?

My favorite thing about fishing and working in Alaska is it’s a place, a job, where people of different races, cultures and backgrounds come together to work and you are judged only by how well you work, your character and respect for others.

What is your favorite way to enjoy the fish you catch?

Yellowfin sole tacos are the best! Baked stuffed flounders are another favorite. All of them on a grill, you can’t go wrong!

What do you want consumers to know about fishing in Alaska?

Of all the fish we catch I would encourage consumers to try frozen fresh flounder fillets. They are a tasty, inexpensive, good source of protein. The management of our fishery is the best in the world and as a fisher of flounders we control catch size to get them processed quickly to maintain a quality product.
